Balancing Ambient vs Flash for Dramatic Portraits

The concept here isn't new, but the execution is where most photographers still fall short. Killing your ambient and letting your flash do the heavy lifting is the fastest way to separate a portrait from a snapshot. If you're still chasing natural-looking flash on every job, you're leaving a whole creative register on the table. Worth a skim if you've never deliberately underexposed ambient to isolate your subject. Skip it if you already know your way around a Rembrandt pattern.
