Japan's Patent Office has invalidated one of Red's key compressed Raw video patents following a challenge by Panasonic. The patent dates to a 2008 US filing and covers high-resolution video cameras that compress Raw data — it's the same patent at the centre of Red's legal disputes with Sony and Apple over the years. Nikon, which now owns Red after buying the company to resolve its own dispute, found itself defending a patent it had previously argued against.
