Stop Buying Modifiers You Don't Understand

Most photographers buy modifiers in the wrong order. Umbrella, softbox, beauty dish, grid — then half of it sits in a bag because the purchase came before the understanding. The single most useful thing in this guide is the one that gets ignored most often: soft versus hard light has nothing to do with diffusion material. It's about the size of the light source relative to your subject. Get that principle locked in and you can look at any modifier, at any price point, and know what it will do before you fire a shot. If you're heading into a studio season and your modifier kit feels like it grew by accident rather than intention, this is worth an hour of your time.
