Leica Partners With Gpixel to Build a True Custom Sensor

Leica ditching Sony sensors matters more than it sounds — custom silicon is how a camera company bakes its actual aesthetic into hardware, not just glass and firmware. If Gpixel's industrial imaging chops translate to a Leica-tuned sensor, future M-series bodies could finally have colour science and dynamic range that's genuinely proprietary again, not just a Sony chip with a red dot on top.

Leica's Next Sensor Partner Has the DJI 8K Pedigree to Back It Up

The people who built Leica's best-loved sensors are now building Leica's next ones. Gpixel's founders cut their teeth at CMOSIS in Belgium, designing the global-shutter chips that went into the M240 and M10 before returning to China and co-developing the 49MP stacked sensor powering DJI's 8K/120p pipeline. This isn't Leica outsourcing to a stranger. It's a partnership with the same engineering bloodline, now working at Leica's direction instead of as a third-party supplier. For Leica shooters, that shift from buying off-the-shelf to joint development means future bodies could finally close the gap between Leica's glass and the sensor sitting behind it.
