Sigma's $799 50-120mm, Nikon Z gets third-party zooms, Skylum drops Aperty

Sigma's 50-120mm f/2.8 DC OS Contemporary goes on sale 22 October at USD $799 in Sony E, Fujifilm X and Canon RF-S mounts. It covers 75-180mm equivalent at a constant f/2.8, weighs 390g and completes Sigma's compact APS-C f/2.8 trio with the 10-18mm and 18-50mm. Per FujiRumors, Fujifilm's XF50-140mm F2.8 II is due in November alongside the X-T6, reportedly smaller and without a tripod collar. If you shoot Fujifilm X and need a fast tele zoom for events, wait for November and compare the two before you buy.

Nikon Z gained two third-party zooms. Sigma's 16-300mm f/3.5-6.7 DC OS Contemporary is confirmed for Z at USD $769 with a purpose-built AF drive algorithm and a rubber-sealed mount, and at 630g it is the heaviest of its five mount versions. Tamron's 20-40mm F2.8 Di III VXD follows at USD $729, USD $30 more than the Sony E version. For Z APS-C shooters who travel light, the Sigma 16-300mm belongs on the shortlist as a one-lens kit.

Skylum is shutting down Aperty, its portrait editing app, despite a five-year update commitment at launch. If your portrait retouching runs through Aperty, move those jobs into an editor you already pay for now, before support ends. Nikon told Nikkei Shimbun it is building a shared engine and software platform for future cameras, with the image processor at the centre and sensors, memory and wireless swapped by configuration. Treat that as background on Nikon's direction and keep buying for the work in front of you.

Sony's FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS II comes in under 1kg, and Fstoppers has a trackside field test. Sony Japan says preorders for the FE 600mm F6.3 GM OSS, opened 29 September, came in well above expectations and fulfilment delays are expected. If you want the 600mm for the summer sport or bird season, get your order in with a local dealer now.

Coming up: Sigma's 50-120mm ships 22 October, the Fujifilm X-T6 and XF50-140mm II are rumoured for November, and the Paris Photo-Aperture PhotoBook Award winners are named at Paris Photo on 13 November. Further out, Imaging World moves to Koelnmesse in Cologne for 24 to 26 September 2027 as Imaging World inspired by photokina.

Lee Friedlander's 68-Year Portrait of Maria, at Fraenkel Gallery

Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco is showing portraits of Maria Friedlander by Lee Friedlander, drawn from 68 consecutive years of marriage. All monochrome, the pictures range from a 1974 camping trip in Colorado to recent years, tracing Maria through motherhood, travel across multiple countries, and into old age. Friedlander appears in many frames himself, sometimes only as a shadow cast across his subject.
