CMOS Inventor Eric Fossum Breaks Down How LOFIC Works

auto_awesomePixelfetch Take
DPReview brought in Professor Eric Fossum, who invented the modern CMOS image sensor, to explain LOFIC: a pixel design that adds a lateral overflow capacitor so highlights don't clip before low-light detail is lost. Fossum had a hand in early LOFIC development and uses a shot-glass-in-a-bowl analogy to show how the sensor reads two effective capacities in sequence, extending the usable range beyond what dual conversion gain sensors currently offer.
