Handmade Utopia is a new photobook by photographer Michael Schmelling and writer David Jacob Kramer documenting the hand-built structures of Northern California's back-to-the-land communes, many still standing in Humboldt and Mendocino counties. Schmelling's work records a vernacular architectural tradition rooted in the 1970s counterculture movement.
