Ishikawa Naoki's Archipelago is a ten-year documentary project covering the island chains to the north and south of Japan, from Okinawa and the Yaeyama Islands through to Sakhalin, the Bering Sea, and Haida Gwaii. Shot across contested and remote territories, the work focuses on local festivals, daily life, and communities that sit at the edges of national histories. Originally published in Aperture's Spring 2016 'Odyssey' issue.
