YouTube Partner Program Overhaul: Key Dates and New Thresholds

YouTube is overhauling its Partner Program from February 1, 2027, and there is a hard deadline: existing monetizing channels must accept updated terms in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027, or ad revenue, Shorts earnings, and fan funding all stop until they do. The entry bar for new channels doubles to 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views, and monthly Shorts payouts now require 10 million qualified views in the trailing 90 days. For filmmaking and photography channels already in the program, the watch-hour-based activity rule gets a friendlier option: uploading two long-form videos or five Shorts every 90 days now counts as active, which is actually useful if you publish in production bursts. The Shorts floor is less alarming than it sounds given YouTube's own math puts 1 million engaged Shorts views at around $405 a month, so most tutorial and gear channels were never seeing meaningful Shorts income anyway. The January 31 deadline is the one to act on now.
