The display on the original 35mm f/1.2 LAB was a talking point, not a selling point, and the clicky multifunction ring frustrated anyone who shoots stills and wants repeatable aperture steps. The N version fixes both without touching the glass or the AF system. Same 15-element optical formula, same Quad Hyper Voice Coil motor, same weather sealing. Just a cleaner lens that behaves like a lens. For Sony shooters running a fast prime at f/1.2 for events or portraits, this is now the more sensible buy.

Sony shooters who wanted the Viltrox 35mm f/1.2 LAB but hated the digital display now have a reason to look again. The new N variant strips out the screen and adds a proper aperture ring with marked stops, which is the version most working photographers actually want for run-and-gun or video work. Optically it's the same 15-element formula with dust and moisture sealing, and at £869 it's still less than half what Sony charges for their own 35mm f/1.4 GM. If you're on Sony full-frame and need a fast 35 that won't embarrass itself in backlit corporate interiors or tight event spaces, this just became a more practical option.

Viltrox's AF 35mm F1.2 LAB N FE is a full-frame f/1.2 prime for Sony E and Nikon Z, retailing at US$999 / £869. The 'N' version swaps the original's OLED focus-distance screen and unmarked control ring for a traditional aperture ring marked f/1.2 to f/16, same optical formula across both. At 910g and 77mm filter thread, it's a substantial piece of glass — Amateur Photographer found the sharpness and bokeh strong for the price, with weather-resistant metal construction, though Sony users lose some function button support.
