A Decade Photographing Waterways Built by Enslaved People

Virginia Richards spent more than a decade photographing a network of tidal waterways in South Carolina's Lowcountry, built by enslaved people, using century-old photographic techniques to match the history she was uncovering. The project started with a swim through a tidal channel on Wadmalaw Island and expanded into years of archival research.
