Luis Manuel Diaz has been photographing his Mexican-American family on large-format film for a decade under the series title Canta y No Llores. A self-portrait made in his grandmother's windowless cobalt bedroom in Michoacán, shot on a view camera with a cable release into a wardrobe mirror, was recently shown at the Upstate Photography Biennial at the Center for Photography at Woodstock. The series spans rural Mexico and suburban Westchester, built around saturated domestic spaces and the performance people put on when a camera appears.
