Magnum Photojournalist Ian Berry Dies Aged 92

Ian Berry, Magnum Photos photojournalist and sole independent witness to the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre, died 13 September 2026 aged 92 after a short illness. Born in Preston in 1934, Berry moved to South Africa at 17 and built an eight-decade career in documentary photography. His Sharpeville images, shot on 35mm while police killed 69 protesters, were suppressed inside South Africa but distributed through London and published by LIFE and Paris Match.
